Astigmatism and Hyperopia

How do people with astigmatism see?

Astigmatism and Hyperopia; In order for our vision to be clear, the rays coming into the eye must be correctly focused on the retina. If the focusing is not correct, eye diseases that cause refractive errors such as myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia occur.

Astigmatism is the condition in which the rays focus on more than one point, not a single point. As a result, the rays are scattered and people with astigmatism have blurred vision.  They also have difficulty seeing objects clearly. Astigmatism can be alone or together with hyperopia and myopia.

What are the Symptoms?

Since astigmatism scatters light and vision, its most basic symptoms are double and blurry vision. Additionally, sunny and bright environments and lights coming from the opposite side at night disturb patients.

It can also cause headache and eye pain. As Retina Academy Eye Clinic, we offer treatment for vision impairments.

We provide you with the most modern methods of treatment for myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and similar problems.

How is it treated?

Problems such as hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism are treated in our clinic. Glasses or contact lenses are the most common forms of treatment. People who do not want to use glasses or lenses can also be treated with surgical methods such as laser and smart lens applications.

Before applying surgical methods, a detailed interview should be made with the patient, and information should be obtained about the patient’s lifestyle, activities and hobbies.

Because the treatment method to be applied will vary according to these characteristics. Otherwise, even if the patient’s eye number is corrected, s/he may be unhappy because of the side effects.

What Are the Degrees of Astigmatism?

The degrees of astigmatism treated in our clinic do not change much, except for some special cases. Despite growing up, these numbers usually stay around the numbers in childhood.

The method to be applied for the treatment of astigmatism is determined according to the patient’s age, astigmatism levels, and the patient’s demands. The most preferred methods are laser surgery and toric lens applications. With the treatment methods applied, it is possible to get rid of eye disorders such as myopia and hyperopia, as well as astigmatism.

Does Glasses Treatment Reduce Degree?

The use of glasses is the simplest treatment for problems such as astigmatism, myopia and hyperopia. People who wear glasses wonder if this treatment reduces the degree of visual impairment.

Wearing glasses does not have any effect on the degree of visual impairment, such as increasing or decreasing it. It provides clear vision only when used. Not wearing glasses despite having visual impairment causes headaches that are effective around the eyes.

What are the Methods Used Other Than Glasses and Lenses?

Apart from glasses, contact lens applications are also used in the treatment of visual impairments. Just like glasses, contact lenses do not treat visual impairment, they only provide clear vision when worn.  Another treatment method for problems such as myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia is laser surgery.

In laser surgery, the outermost transparent layer of the eye, called the cornea, is reshaped and it is aimed that the light falls on the retina clearly. There are various methods in laser surgery.

The patient’s needs and the anatomical structure of the eye are evaluated and the appropriate method is chosen. Unfortunately, not every eye is suitable for laser surgery. Additionally, laser only corrects myopia, not hypermetropia.

Is Laser Surgery Necessary in Astigmatism? How Much of an Improvement Is Achieved?

Laser surgery is often a suitable treatment option for people with astigmatism. The aim is to reduce the degree of visual impairment to a level that will provide clear vision without the need for glasses. In patients with very high astigmatism or thin corneas, laser surgery may not be applied and other methods may be preferred.

What is myopia (nearsightedness)?

A myopic eye is longer than normal or has a cornea that is too steep. For this reason, light rays fall in front of the retina. Thus, nearsightedness occurs. On the other hand, the patient does not have any problems seeing near distances. People with this problem are called myopic.

How do people with myopia see?

People with myopia have trouble seeing far distances. People with this disease see blurry far distances and see clearly near distances. Myopia can be treated with different methods.

What are the Symptoms?

The most basic symptom of myopia is the difficulty in seeing far distances. At the same time, myopic people squint their eyes too much accordingly. As a result, they suffer from headaches. It is possible to get rid of this problem with treatment applications.

How is it treated?

We offer different methods to our patients for the treatment of myopia. Among these methods, the use of glasses is very often preferred. Additionally, contact lenses are also widely used. These two methods are simple and effective treatment methods.

Laser therapy, on the other hand, is very suitable for myopia, as it is both effective and long-lasting. Eyes that are not suitable for laser can be treated with smart lens applications and intraocular phakic lens surgeries.

What are the Differences Between Myopia and Hyperopia?

Vision impairments called myopia and hyperopia are opposites of each other. People with myopia see blurry far distances and see clearly near distances. On the other hand, people with hyperopia see blurry near distances and see clearly far distances. These diseases, which we offer treatment for, are classified by their characteristics.

What Are the Degrees of Myopia? Do Degrees Increase or Decrease Over Time? Until What Age Does It Progress?

There is no spontaneous reduction in myopia. If it is below 3 degrees, it is called mild myopia. If it is between 3 and 6 degrees, it is called moderate myopia, while above 6 degrees it is called high myopia. Myopia usually occurs in adolescence due to the elongation of the eye with the growth of the child. It progresses until the age of 18, when height growth stops. It shows a stable course at later ages. In some people, it may rarely progress after the age of 18.

Does Glasses Treatment Reduce The Degree of Myopia? Will There Be Progress In Degree If Glasses Are Not Used?

It is not possible to reduce the degree of myopia by using glasses. Glasses treatment has no such effect. However, if glasses are not used in childhood, a faster degree increase may occur.

What are the Methods Used Other Than Glasses and Lenses in Nearsightedness?

We, as Retina Academy, also provide services to people with myopia for laser surgery treatment in our clinic. This treatment method is a preferred treatment method as it is both effective and extremely practical. After a detailed eye examination and tests, it is evaluated whether the eye is suitable for the laser.

Eyes that are not suitable for laser can be treated with smart lens and phakic intraocular lens applications. At the end of the detailed interview with the patient, which treatment will be applied is decided according to the patient’s needs, daily activities and the structure of the eye.

Is Laser Surgery Necessary in Myopia? How Much of an Improvement Is Achieved?

Laser surgery is one of the treatment options for those with myopia. In any eye surgery, there is no guarantee that the eye disorder will decrease up to 0 with a 100% probability. However, in laser surgeries, the patient’s eye is brought to a level where s/he can do all his/her daily works without using glasses.

With current laser surgery techniques, there is no need to use glasses or lenses. Thanks to laser surgery techniques, 95% improvement is achieved. Laser surgery cannot cure presbyopia, that is, farsightedness, which occurs after the age of 40. For this reason, it is usually applied to patients under the age of 40.

What is Hyperopia (Farsightedness)?

People with blurry vision at near distances are called hypermetropic. This eye defect occurs because the anterior – posterior diameter of your eye is smaller than it should be or because the cornea is flatter than it should be. It is commonly known as the opposite of myopia.

How do people with hyperopia see?

In general, people with hyperopia see blurry near distance. Although they can see far distance more clearly, they cannot actually see at the level they should be, and they constantly squint their eye muscles to focus. However, due to aging or because the degree becomes too high, they can no longer make clear by focusing and they begin to see blurry the far distance.

What are the Symptoms?

Hypermetropes have difficulty in reading because they can’t see near distance. When reading anything, words are intertwined. Additionally, they constantly focus by contracting their eye muscles in order to see the far distance clearly.  For this reason, problems such as headache and pain around the eyes occur.

How is it treated?

Hyperopia, one of the vision impairments, is treated in different ways. The main treatment methods are the use of lenses and glasses. Additionally, effective treatment is performed with laser or intraocular lenses.

What Are the Degrees of Hyperopia? Do Degrees Increase or Decrease Spontaneously Over Time? Until What Age Does It Progress?

Today, many babies are born with hyperopia. As the child grows, the length of the eye increases and as a result, hyperopia decreases.  In some children, hyperopia may be high and may cause amblyopia development, especially if it is unilateral.

For this reason, every child around the age of 3 should be examined. During adolescence, as the height increases, the hyperopia decreases with the elongation of the eyes. After the age of 18, there is not much change. Since the focusing power decreases, especially after the age of 40, far distance vision problems begin in hypermetropic people.

Does Glasses Treatment Reduce The Degree of Hyperopia? What Happens If Glasses Are Not Used? Will There Be Progress In Degree?

Wearing glasses does not reduce the degree of Hyperopia in any way. Glasses have no such effect on vision impairments. However, if there is hyperopia in children and glasses are not used, amblyopia may develop.

What are the Methods Used Other Than Glasses and Lenses?

People with hyperopia can be treated with laser surgeries and intraocular lens applications, apart from glasses and lenses.

What is presbyopia?

presbiyopiWith aging, the eye’s focusing power, that is, the near-focusing power, decreases. This is because the flexibility of the lens inside the eye is reduced.

Therefore, focusing is not enough to see the near distance and glasses are needed. This is called presbyopia. You can get service from us for eye problems such as presbyopia, astigmatism, myopia and hyperopia.
